8 year old butt kickin'

Well, once again I'm on porch duty. I'm not getting all the rest that I've been wanting to get, but I'm a happy man. Today was the opening for our 2B term. It's the 4th 2 week session that we have during the summer. I can honestly say that minus one mishap, it was the smoothest of any opening I've been involved in. We had to send a couple of girls to the San Antonio Airport to pick up a couple campers, and on the way back they had a blowout and somehow the fuel lines got stripped out of the sweet purple camp minivan. It wouldn't start, and because of that a 3 and a half hour trip turned into about 7. Like I said though except for that, all went great.

We had about 70 new campers come in today. A lot of new faces, a lot of old faces. We had one kid come in today that I remember well from years past. Well he came in, and I didn't recognize him at all. It was upsetting for me, because I was excited when I saw his name on the list, then when he came in I had to check out his name tag. We also had a camper come in from Mexico who is just about one of the most amazing kids you've ever seen. Not like honor camper, not yet, but very nice and funny to talk to. He was a counselor favorite last year.

Well anyway I'm sitting here on the porch and it's hot. I mean really hot. No breeze, nothing. I guess it would help if I took the laptop off my lap but I'm comfortable. This month so far as been as close to unbearable heat as you can get. It's a little humid, plus near 100 degree weather. Not good for a fat man like myself.

So I had an interesting morning this morning. This change from one set of 2 week camper to the next is neat because we're still running the camp with all the 4 week campers. So for about a full day, it's just the kids that are here for all 4 weeks. That means that we get hand made, homemade cinnamon rolls. These things are phenomenal. After breakfast, I was out on the porch playing with some of our youngest 4 week campers. Me being the big brute that I am, started picking the 2 kids up and flinging them around. Showing my strength and superiority to these 8 year olds does a lot for my ego. Well one of the little kids, who is from one of the biggest camp families we have, squares up like karate style and starts coming after me. Right before I grabbed him and picked him up again, I was just thinking to myself...

What if this kid is a blackbelt, and is about to wreck shop on me?

How awesome of a story would that be? Friend-Sancho, what happened to your eye? Me-Uhh I got smoked by an 8 year old. I don't think explaining that the kid was a blackbelt would help much, do you?

Anyway, that may have been way more funny going through my head than it was reading there. 3 weeks of camp left, then my life becomes a lot more interesting! Going to move houses, twice actually. Once away from camp, then out of the house that I grew up in. We sold that one. Don't know for sure where in Kerrville we're going, but hopefully I won't be around that long....

Finally reached 1000 hits on my blog. That's sweet...

Goodnight one and all!
